I’m not a big fan of long road trips – actually, I’m not too fond of short road trips either, but I’m not a baller and I can’t afford a flight to every place that I want to travel to. I once had the not-so-bright idea of taking a long road trip from Dallas to Charleston, but only because I wanted Winston to come along for the fun. Since Winston is a high maintenance breed, I’m a little hesitant to travel by plane with him. So sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do for your kiddos.
I recently drove down to New Braunfels and wanted to share my road trip essentials with you.
WEAR THIS ON A ROAD TRIP
I’ve seen a lot of girls wearing heels during their 6AM flights, “Props to you, girlfriend!” I personally feel the need to be comfy while traveling. Don’t get me wrong, if I’m packing some boots or heels that I don’t want to stick in a bag, I’ll wear them, but I’d much rather not. I like traveling in comfy leggings or some distressed jeans, a cute t-shirt and sneakers. These t-shirts are THE comfiest tees I’ve tried on. This tee is 95% rayon so it’s silky-smooth and soft! They’re super affordable so I grabbed a couple of different colors. I’m a huge fan of blocked leggings, but it’s hard for me to wear black when I have the ultimate shedding machine at home – Winston. Since these leggings aren’t cotton, his fur doesn’t get stuck to them and that makes them my favorite leggings in all the land. Can any other dog-mommas relate?!
PACK THIS FOR A ROAD TRIP
I’m a little boujee – mmkay, maybe very boujee, but I don’t like using a pillow that isn’t mine. I mean, isn’t it weird that you lay your face for several hours where a stranger laid their face, too? Lol. Plus, fabric softener triggers my acne so I’d rather bring along my own fabric softener-free pillow! I’m also really cold natured so a small throw blanket is an absolute must for me!
Whether you’re taking a long or short road trip, you’ll need some good jams to listen to so you can stay awake! I like to take those hours on the road to listen to new music, too! This is where Spotify becomes my best friend. I’m constantly adding new music to different playlists that I create. Don’t forget to bring your headphones, too! Sometimes the other passengers may not be fans of the music you listen to. I remember driving down to Mexico as a little girl twice a year and listening to my dad’s favorite band on repeat during the entire 24 hour road trip. I wasn’t a huge fan of it at the time but now, the songs just bring back those fun memories. AND…let’s just say, I still know the lyrics to every song!
Photography has been a hobby of mine for a long time and I always bring my camera with me everywhere. You may want to document a fun place you stop along the way. I like traveling with my Canon G7X and with my Canon 5D Mark II. The Canon G7X has a flippable screen, so if you’re a selfie queen, BUY THIS CAMERA!
Time flies when you’re being entertained with a good read. I personally love a physical copy of a book, but I’ve been wanting to go digital because of the convenience of it and the space it would save me. I’m currently reading Me. Inc by Gene Simmons – loving’ it so far!
Dirty hands, dirty kids, dirty dog, trust me.. You’ll need these.
What’s the worst thing that could happen to a millennial? A dead phone. Don’t let it happen to you! I personally love to travel with my portable charger because obviously, I can’t survive without my phone. I keep a charger in my car, at work, in my purse and another one in my room. Excessive? Maybe. #sorrynotsorry
If I’m on the road for a few hours, I’m bound to want to munch on something. I always travel with gummy bears, gum, and chips. Mmkkkay..if I’m being honest, I throw in some peanut M&M’s too! No shame here, people!
This app will save your life – maybe that’s a little dramatic, but it will definitely save you some time. Not only does this social traffic and navigation guide give you directions to your destination, but it also lets other drivers report traffic jams or accidents, so you get real-time updates on the road.
I hope this list of road trip essentials has helped you create a list of your own road trip necessities. What has been the longest road trip you’ve taken? How long of a drive was it? I’d love to hear about it!
